About Roller Derby

Roller derby is a fast-paced contact sport played on roller skates. Two teams of five skaters each compete in races called "jams" around an oval track. Each team has one "jammer" who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The other four players act as "blockers," working to help their jammer score points while simultaneously blocking the opposing jammer. Physical contact is allowed, making roller derby a dynamic and exciting sport to watch. Strategy, agility, and teamwork are essential for success in roller derby.

Photographing Roller Derby

I started shooting roller derby in 2022 and quickly found it was a fun and challenging sport to photograph. I like to shoot from the inside of the track most of the time where I can get shots up close. As a Michigan roller derby photographer, I’ve traveled around the state shooting amazing teams. Sometimes the venues are challenging with how they are lit, but that is nothing new in the world of sports photography.
